About Department

The Department of Botany was established in 1958 and the subject was offered as a principal subject for graduation in 1966. The Department offers a graduate and post-graduate course in Botany. Department started Post Graduate course in Botany from 2019 with Cytogenetics and Plant Breeding as a specialization. Department has well equipped research laboratory for Ph.D.in Botany recognized by the Shivaji University, Kolhapur. Well-stocked herbarium of a wide variety of plants is the speciality of this department. The department also maintains a botanical garden covering an area of one acre which is one of the prime assets of the department. This garden includes several varieties of medicinal, endangered and ornamental plants for which it has received substantial financial support from the Ministry of Environment and Forests. The department also has a well- stocked museum of diverse plant specimens and well-equipped laboratories with equipment’s like Spectrophotometer, Laminar Air Flow, Electrophoresis unit, Cooling Centrifuge, Air sampler, pH meter, Microtome, BOD Incubator, Autoclave,etc. A separate departmental library is also available.


The department has successfully organised National Conference and workshops. It is also recognised for PG teaching and some students have successfully completed their M. Phil studies. Faculty of the department is actively engaged in research work and several members have published research papers in national and international journals. They have also presented research work in national and international conferences. Faculty members of the department have received major and minor research projects funded from various agencies, such as Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), Government of India and University Grants Commission, WRO, Pune.The Department organizes various field activities, visits to various educational and research institutions with an aim to inculcate the interest of the students in the subject. Awareness of Botany among the students is spread through organizing various Educational Programs and Workshops, visit to Botanical Garden, tree-planting initiatives, organization of study tours etc. Department provides consultancy services to students and farmers in the vicinity. It also provides medicinal plants to society. The department conducts self-financing short term courses Identification and Conservation of Medicinal Plants and Certificate course in Flower arrangement and Floral Decoration.The Central Library is rich with more than 3000 books of Botany, written by Indian and foreign authors.
